In a previous post about Open-Source and Free software, I kind of got carried away and screwed up. Thanks to SiliconicHighway (guessing here!!) for pointing me to this essay on the FSF site , actually open source is not the same as free software.
Here is what the FSF site says about the issue.
The fundamental difference between the two movements is in their values, their ways of looking at the world. For the Open Source movement, the issue of whether software should be open source is a practical question, not an ethical one. As one person put it, “Open source is a development methodology; free software is a social movement.” For the Open Source movement, non-free software is a suboptimal solution. For the Free Software movement, non-free software is a social problem and free software is the solution.
Though both are different, for all practical purposes, both are same. The basic difference is not in the licenses (though they may vary), but that the term open-source is open to more ambiguity.
Still, doesn’t affect me in any way…from now I shall use the software which are free/and open source
Thanks again to the poster who lemme know.
