Review of ‘Contact’

Two weeks ago, I watched the movie Contact. It stars Jodie Foster. The IMDB bulrb goes like this

Contact, based on the novel of the same name by Carl Sagan, is the story of a free thinking radio astronomer (Jodie Foster) who discovers an intelligent signal broadcast from deep space. She and her fellow scientists are able to decipher the Message and discover detailed instructions for building a mysterious Machine. Will the Machine spell the end of our world, or the end of our superstitions? Will we take our place among the races of the Galaxy, or are we just an upstart species with a long way to go?

Well, it’s an awesome movie. If you want to see a movie made about the Fountainhead in a very relevant manner, I would make this. For us engineers, relating to architects is kind of difficult. It’s easier for engineers to relate to other engineers and scientists!

Jodie Foster is a geek. The woman geek personified. And she is beaautiful. Managed to do something…replace by desktop image for a day. And made me put the SETI@home screensaver on my mac.

She’s a scientist. She’s a rational being. Demands proof for existence of God, and tries to ask and answer questions on God.

It’s an interesting plot from scientific theme too…it’s based on Carl Sagan’s book.

Mostly, it’s an inspiring story of how not to give up, keep fighting…and further, not to take shit from anyone!!

To finish off, southpark trivia: In the Southpark episode “Cancelled” (Season 7, episode 4) , the alien takes the form of Stan’s dad, an apparent rip from “Contact”. And they obviously thought that it sucked. And finally the alien takes a form of a taco which craps icecream.

About robotgeek

Rocker, philosopher, Mac lover, geek, robotics freak and an optimist. These describe me adequately, i guess! When I find time away from my lab, I love to code my robots using java to be compatible with robocode . I also make it a point to visit Slashdot or read on Wikipedia . Of course, all this has to be done while listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica or Pearl Jam, mostly on Shoutcast online radio . I also like to read. Though I don't find much time now, I generally stick to what I like, which is Ayn Rand. Let's just hope the world heads in the right direction 2004 has been the year of the blog, and I could not be left out!
