Is India moving back towards Tribalism?

I was going through a book “The Voice of Reason: Essays in Objectivist Thought” by Ayn Rand and I came across a great essay on the topic of ‘Global Balkanization’. I thought that this topic had great relevance to what is happening in India today. This article is mainly an application of ideas of Ayn Rand to this particular topic.

India has been a great advocate of Socialism, a system which attempts to bring together a mixed economy, which implies that it tries to bring together two types of incompatibilies: Communism and Capitalism. The results of these can be seen clearly in India. Most of the things that we identify as bad somehow traces back to communism. The purpose of this article is not to prove why capitalism is better than communism, but to discuss the rather disturbing trends which are happening around us.

Initially, when our nation was split, i believe it was mostly on the basis of language. Language is a conceptual tool to help communicate. To a person who understands the function of language, it makes no difference what sounds are chosen to name things.

India is going through a different kind of tribalism, which Ayn Rand terms as ‘Modern Tribalism.’ Firstly, Uttar Pradesh was split into three states for no apparent rational reason, and then our own state is being split for the purpose of a separate telangana. It is not clear how having a separate state will aid development, especially when the state will still follow the nation’s policy of mixed economy.

I hope that we don’t reach a day when our country is split into 150 states, and realise that it was all due to our inaction.

Stop the split of the state. It serves no purpose, and will only lead us back to the dark ages.

About robotgeek

Rocker, philosopher, Mac lover, geek, robotics freak and an optimist. These describe me adequately, i guess! When I find time away from my lab, I love to code my robots using java to be compatible with robocode . I also make it a point to visit Slashdot or read on Wikipedia . Of course, all this has to be done while listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica or Pearl Jam, mostly on Shoutcast online radio . I also like to read. Though I don't find much time now, I generally stick to what I like, which is Ayn Rand. Let's just hope the world heads in the right direction 2004 has been the year of the blog, and I could not be left out!
